One of the most common questions I get asked by pretty much every client is why is wedding photography so expensive?
Okay so to be honest you get what you pay for- Yes there are cheaper photographers in the industry that are just starting out and charge less- Reality is photography is an art yes and we make it look so easy - we are creating something that gives our clients years of memories and it's not an easy task to do and it comes with a ton of responsibility and DEBT. Yep you read that right- DEBT but it's not as bad as you think - It cost money to run a business just like any store or restaurant that you visit. So in order to pay my bill's and then make a profit I have to charge what seems like an ungodly amount. Reality is with weddings alone I can only take on one wedding a day limiting my income, so I have to price my weddings to make sure I still make money during slow times. Yes we do have slower times of the year.
Let me explain - First of all This is my job and this is my income, Yes it might look like I have the luxury of working from home, just picking up a camera every once in a while and clicking the button a bunch of times and Poof I've done my job. It's so much more then that.
I've spent years watching online courses, going to workshops , learning everything I can about photography and all of that took money. Just like some of you may have done in college to land the job you have now. I have to market my self, since I am not a store front I have to put my self out into the world for others to see, So I have to use social media to promote my business, how do I pay for the internet or the computer I am using? I have hundreds of emails and phone calls to answer from potential clients and current clients and local vendors, which means I need internet and phone to be able to do. I need to make money to keep my equipment clean and working properly for your big day. My car that takes me to your wedding and engagement sessions has to have gas to drive it and insurance and tires to take me to and from locations.
Here's a break down of why it's expensive to have a professional wedding photographer capture your wedding day.
So lets say that my base package price is $1000 to cover your day for 8 hrs. Which ends up being more then 8 hours between drive time , arriving early to make sure we are on site and ready to go and possibly having to stay a little late to make sure everything is taken care of before we leave. Don't forget the time spent editing those beautiful images , editing a wedding takes around 30-40 hours to fully edit each wedding, Now that's a ton of time spent in front of my computer.
Here's the real honest truth Many photographers end up not making a lot of money. If we broke down everything that I had to pay for and provide for my business, I am making less then minimum wage during your wedding. Now your asking your self why would I do such a thing, It's simple really I love what I do and I'm blessed to have been apart of so many couples lives. This is my passion, to give clients something they can cherish for years to come, it's a tough job but one I want to do.
Even when photographers charge “exorbitant” prices. The truth is, any great wedding photographer invests a lot of money and time into providing couples a great experience. They provide an invaluable service and beautiful images that, at the end of the day, are actually priceless. It's the images that you will have that are the most important part of your wedding. Why not trust some one who knows how to capture your wedding just as you have dreamed it would be. I know it's hard to understand the pricing when you see a photographers website starting pricing is $2000. There is a reason behind that number, I have to keep a roof over my head and the lights on so you can have beautiful images to display in your own home to cherish year after year.
